Decorating With Your Heart, Interior Design – An Expression Of Meaning And Purpose

Decorating your home should reflect your personal history. You are telling a story of who you are and how you live. It is not about the Interior Designer. These sentiments mixed with a practical approach to how you use your space will ensure that your home will suit your needs and personal story. Here are my top three favourites.

My father was a classically trained pianist and he worked as a musician all his life, he was also a self-taught gifted artist by vocation. His artwork has played a significant role in the interior design of my home. My favorite piece is a pastel drawing of the Spanish Steps in Rome. I have placed it at the end of my staircase and it reflects back on the steps we have taken daily over the years in our own home. When I look at his work it reminds me of his dedication to fine detail it is nothing short of inspiring.

The Sid Dickens Memory Blocks have a special place in my heart. The first one I purchased was the Red Hearts with Scripts for our first wedding anniversary. What drew me to these is that you can create your own grouping that reflects your interests and sensibilities. I became aware of them when they first became available in the Mid 90’s. Since then my collection has grown and grown. They have lived in corridors, entrances, above the TV and as a feature wall. I am currently selecting three Memory Blocks for the en-suite. Who says that art-work doesn’t belong in the bathroom?

The final piece contains my heart and soul! It is a feature chair that I designed and made at University, it was inspired by renowned Scottish Architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. My lecturer at the time wanted to buy it from me but luckily I had the good sense to keep it. It is a family favourite and it reminds me of the process of Interior Design it starts with inspiration it is developed into a concept and leads to manufacturing.

They say that home is where the heart is, if your heart is in your décor you will always be home.
